Fruit Fly problem in plant in office?

I work in an office, and I have planted a Red Amaryllis plants. I got the plant in a box as a christmas gift kind of as a "Start your own" kit.

The plant has been growing since before christmas, and now I am noticing a lot of fruit flies(or something like that) in the soil and flying around.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of them without poisioning my plant?

Fruit Fly problem in plant in office?
plain old Dawn dishsoap and water...won't hurt plants. I use it on my roses...

or replant with new dirt.
Reply:agree...take a piece of high acid fruit and place in the plant. Also do not water your plant. wetness will attract
Reply:Pour about 1/2 inch of cider vinegar in a small cup or bowl, add a few drops of lemon, lime, or apple dish soap. Place the cup or bowl close to the plant and leave it there for several days. This will attract the fruit flies and kill them.

In the mean time water the soil very lightly with water and a few drops of liquid dish soap.

If you still have fruit flies in a few days...get rid of the plant so the problem doesn't spread all over the office.
Reply:Try cutting a lemon in half then put it behind the plant, the fruit flys are attraached to the smell, and when they land on the lemon they die due to the acid in it.
Reply:You can hang a bag of water in the door way then they wont bother the plants.. I kno that works with regular flies im not sure about fruit flies though..
Reply:AHHHH!! I hate those things. They are fungus flies. They eat the fungus that grows in the soil in your plants. Best thing to do is to just trash the plant before they inhabit the other plants in the office-- trust me they will. If you LOVE the plant then you can try repotting it with fresh soil and washing the roots thoroughly. Sometimes sitting them outside will get ride of the fungus flies as well. Given the time of year you may just freeze the thing. Anyway, bid the plant farewell. Those flies are not friendly.
Reply:Make sure you aren't overwatering - this draws bugs and also can rot and kill your plant. If that doesn't help, you may have to repot the plant in some new clean soil.
Reply:the plant is to wet let it dry out alittle bit and that should help

Although I am very excited for you and your theatrical endeavors. I have to admit that I am a little concerned that you would post your picture on a public website. You are adorable and it is a great picture, but I suggest that you don't do it again. I'm glad that no one is allowed to contact you on this website so you are smart.

Good Luck! I hope that you get the role you want.
Reply:You will get one of the orphans.
Reply:Probably Molly or kate-it would have to be quite a main character...

good luck anyway!

Flower preservative in potted plants?

Just wondering if anyone knows if you can use the powdered flower preservative that comes with cut flowers in a potted plant as a fertilizer? It's an Amaryllis.

Flower preservative in potted plants?
No it is for fresh cut flowers and is not plant food if you want to give the Amaryllis a food give it bulb food.

What makes a plant stop growing at a certain height?

I potted two Amaryllis bulb. Early on, they were quite different heights. But by three weeks they were within a millimeter or two of ech other. What made them stop growing at a certain height?

What makes a plant stop growing at a certain height?
Genetics...!
Reply:This is not the answer I was looking for. I want to know what hormonal or other chemical changes in the organism effect the stop in graowth. Report It
Reply:Plants are like people. Their height is controlled by their dna.

Probably one bulb was planted in a better soil, or had better light--and so grew faster. But eventually the other one caught up.
Reply:The final height of a plant is built into its genes. Your second plant caught up because of biological compensation. This is as the plants get older the difference between them become less different. This happens as the plants grow they can access more water and nutrients so the difference at the beginning becomes less important. The final height can be determined by flowering in some species but it is mostly control by genes. We sometimes try to breed shorter plants (with double dwarf genes) so less plant energy is put into vegetative growth and more energy can be used for reproductive growth. An example is wheat which is now very short now and more energy can be put into grain production.

Thanks Tim http://www.nuganics.com.au
Reply:Genes and roots limit height of plants.

How do you take care of outdoor plants in winter?

I am no expert when it comes to gardening. This spring, I accidentally locked myself out of the house and, having nothing better to do till my husband got home and let me in, I went to walmart and bought a bunch of gardening supplies, and planted a flower bed in our front yard. That one bed has progressed into pots, and hanging plants in our front and back yard, and now that cold weather is on its way, I realize that I have no idea how to take care of plants in the winter. Can I just leave them out? will they just die off and come back next spring? I can take my potted ones inside, but what about the ones in beds, are there any precautions I need to take, or will they be ok? We live in south Texas, so it should not get too cold, but it has been known to freeze here. I have various wildflowers and other garden plants in beds, Amaryllis and Calla Lilly, Impatiens, and a small Kumquat tree in pots. Is there any kind of maintenance I need to do to them over the winter?

How do you take care of outdoor plants in winter?
Kumquat tree needs to be brought in.

Impatients will not tolerant freezing temps. Bring them in or cover with plasitc or sheet during cold temps.

Wildflowers will probably come back in seed form as long as that area gets water.

Calla lilly should be trimmed low....It should sprout out during mid spring.

Amaryllis needs to be brought in or covered.
Reply:if frost is forecasted cover your plants at least with a sheet you can start now to toughen them by spraying them with 2 oz of liquid sea weed to a gallon of water do this about once a week till it gets cold this well give your plant about 5 more degrees of cold tolerance
Reply:I live in N FL-impatiens will not tolerate a frost but I have some potted ones that have been around for several years. You need to pinch them way back now and they will grow and bloom again. I have seen amaryllis in bloom in summer outside. If you have sun-a bout 4-6 hours daily in your yard there are alot of hardier flowes you can use- go to the local Lowes or Home depot and see what they have, This is a learning pricess and much of it is trial and error as each yard is it's own microclimate.
Reply:Some perennials will die off and return in the spring. You must get in touch with a garden center or go to the library and research the type of plants you have and learn what will return, what you could bring inside and what is merely an annual. Bring the kumquat tree inside for the winter. The wildflowers will no doubt return--just let them go and the birds might eat the seeds over the winter. Impatients might reseed. Amaryllis and calla lily should be dug up , kept until spring and then planted again.

Is it okay to place plants under a grow light even if the plant is a great indoor, winter plant?

I want to grow Amaryllis flowers in the winter but i am afraid they will not receive enough sunlight.

Is it okay to place plants under a grow light even if the plant is a great indoor, winter plant?
Gro lights aren't all they're bluffed up to be. If you want to mimic sunlight, you need to use halide and hydroponic lights
Reply:I have two on my vines and they doubled in length since I put them up

What do you think of?

Amaryllis for a girl?

What do you think of?
nice that'll piss the teachers and her future employers off when they try to spell it
Reply:It's okay...not my style, but if you like it go for it

Reply:Not my favourite name if i'm being honest (sorry)

Reply:I love it. But, what middle name would go with it? Or, you could just not use a middle name... Either way, I love it!
Reply:hi nice idear but she will get teased
Reply:Beautiful name...Like the flower..
Reply:I think it is hard to say and the baby will be made fun of.
Reply:I think it would be better as a second name with a more traditional first name.
Reply:Very Cute!!!! Congrats!
Reply:noooo!!! it makes me think of armadillos!! lol

Reply:Named after a pretty plant...it's very nice.
Reply:very stunning... i love it
Reply:I think it's a gorgeous name. Amaryllis Kate would be so pretty!
Reply:I absolutely love that, very classic. Amaryllis Mae works well. And don't worry about people having trouble spelling it, a unique name is a special trait!
Reply:Well its kinda cute I'd say....but it will be a little awkward when the girl grows older....Perhaps you could make it her middle name instead? E.g. Jeanne Amaryllis
Reply:its really cute
Reply:Not my first choice...
Reply:It's pretty.

I like the version that the poster's friend has ~ Amaryss.
Reply:Hmm..I think it's very unique and pretty..
Reply:Is that the plant with big orange red flower . That was the first thing I thought but I like flower names for girls , Violet, lily rose daisy so why not Amaryllis she could always call her self amy if she did not like it.
Reply:Im all for unusual names.....but this might be a bit much. Although if its an important, or sentimental name to you, go for it.....just think of a cute nick name
Reply:I like both the name and flower...(I had to look it up) here is a picture just in case anybody wants a look.

Christmas plants?

we have a amaryllis plant, it has 5 flowers on ,is this rare ?

Christmas plants?
Only because they would sell out first. In a really good flower shop they would be available, but if you got it at Wal MArt, dude buy a lotto ticket, because you have LUCK.
Reply:Yes rare as a rose bush..lol
Reply:no
Reply:Yes, and I'll bet it's beautiful!! Lucky!!
Reply:No, the number of flowers depends upon how large the bulb and how healthy it is. It is not uncommon to have four or five.
Reply:if it's just one stalk, yeah, that's really rare. if it's coming off a bunch of different sprouts, you just have a mature bulb

Would you consider me as a good actress and singer?

Would you onsider me as a good actress and singer?
There are several stages a professional actor has to get through to get work:

1) Credentials of

-- a) training and

-- b) experience

2) Interview with an agent

3) Audition with an agent

4) Audition with casting director

5) Callback(s) with casting director, director, possibly producer

6) Rehearsals

7) Performance

Only when I see you at step #7 will I know whether or not you're "good," and then I'll only know how good you were for that one performance.

Your experience is impressive, but that's only step 1b and you've omitted step 1a entirely.

If you think I'm tough, go to NYC, where people with your experience and with incredible talent get turned down at auditions every day. If they're "good," they take it in stride, put it behind them, move on and focus on their next audition.
Reply:The proof is in the pudding and you have some nice pudding going there....

You're at least bread and butter and that's better than most!
Reply:it sounds like you must be a good actress/singer given what you've written BUT I would have to hear you and see you in person to really be able to judge.
Reply:You have quite a list of credits. It would be impossible, however, to say whether you are a good actress or singer without seeing you act or sing.

Your resume is probably enough, however, to get you called in to audition. And sometimes getting the audition is the hardest part of the business.

Keep it up! :-)

What is an...?

amaryllis?

First right answer gets atleast 11 points.

What is an...?
AMARYLLIS plain and simple is part of The Belladonna Lily which is a bulbous plant
Reply:Amaryllis, the wanton country maid.

Nature Art disdaineth; her beauty is her own.

Her when we court and kiss, she cries: forsooth, let go!

But when we come where comfort is, she never will say no.

If I love Amaryllis, she gives me fruit and flowers;

But if we love these ladies, we must give golden showers.

Give them gold that sell love, give me the nut-brown lass,

Who when we court and kiss, she cries: forsooth, let go!

But when we come where comfort is, she never will say no.

These ladies must have pillows and beds by strangers wrought.

Give me a bower of willows, of moss and leaves unbought,

And fresh Amaryllis with milk and honey fed,

Who when we court and kiss, she cries: forsooth, let go!

But when we come where comfort is, she never will say no.
Reply:Amaryllis is a monotypic (only one species) genus of plant also known as the Belladonna Lily or naked ladies.
Reply:Very large blooms. With two flowers per succulent thick stem, Amaryllis is a dramatic addition to any table. They can be featured in bouquets, though their size limits the number that cna be used. Colors include white, red, pink, orange and salmon. Also available in striped varieties. Year-round availability.
Reply:Amaryllis is not only a flowering plant but also a woman's name, like Rose, Lily, and Violet. That is what Mommy of 2 was "going on about".

Music Man ! LOOK PLEASE !?

ok, so our school play this year is the Music Man,and I tried out for both Amaryllis and Gracie, and I want to know, which one is a bigger part, with more scenes ?

please only answer if you really know, and please don't be rude !

thanks :]

Music Man ! LOOK PLEASE !?
Amaryllis is much bigger. She only sing a small piece of Goodnight My Someone which is 1 line of harmony with Marian at the very end of the song. She is there throughout the song and is supposed to be playing the background on the piano until she stops and watches Marian sing.

She has a scene where she invites her crush, Winthrop, to her birthday party but he refuses. That's when she gets into a discussion with marian about love and not wanting to become an old maid like her... check out the links for more info.

Gracie maybe has 2 lines and Amaryllis has a good deal more and is featured in other scenes where Gracie is not such as the gym scene where Mrs. Shinn is leading her Hiawatha girls or whatever they're called and Tommy sets off the fire cracker. Of course it depends on the director, but we've done this show 3 times and Gracie has always been left out while Amaryllis carries the rifle.

Gracie does say "Tommy Djilas did it" when the fire cracker goes off" and "The Wells Fargo wagon's coming" or something like that at the top of Act 2.

good luck!

Marianne
Reply:Amaryllis. She is the friend that has a crush on Winthrop, and (I think) sings part of "Goodnight My Someone." It's through her that you know some of the information about Winthrop and his shyness.

Gracie is a tiny character, the Mayor Shin's younger daughter. More than anything, she's a part of the chorus, following her parents or older sister, with a few lines here and there.

Hope your audition goes well!
Reply:Amaryllis has the bigger part, but any part is what it is all about. To be part of the fellowship of other people who have chosen to put themselves out there and tell a story to an audience, is the real reward and accomplishment.Good luck

Are these seed pods, and what to do with them?

My amaryllis bloomed and died, the bulb beneath the bloom dried and burst open and had I assumed to be black seeds. Are they? and can I plant them?

Best advise is pick one choice %26amp; follow it.

I lightly cover the seed soil temp 64-79F takes 14-35 days to germinate

Success!!!I just started growing some of my prize Amaryllis from seed! Always had good luck with the baby bulbs-have lots of Amaryllis-and used to cut the foliage to the ground, wasting the seedpods.Oh foolish me.Now,I have-last month, saved the pods and seeds-soaked the little flat seeds in a bowl of water for a few days-and gently planted them in a shallow tray of 50-50 good dirt and sandy stuff-and all sprouted last week!!!!!!They are so cute!!!!!Two inches now and tiny little replicas of their mommy's foliage. Next-when they are about 4" tall-they will be in a larger, deeper tray-and then in about two weeks-into their rightful place in my garden!!!Who'da thunk it! Wish you luck with yours too.

Amaryllis can be propagated by either seed, offsets or cuttage. Since seeds do not always produce plants similar to their parents, most named hybrids and selected strains are propagated by cuttage.
Reply:Yes they are the seed of the plant but no they are not plantable by themselves your flower has died, best get a new one. Amaryllis is a bulb not a seed, every bulb has seeds in them but its just part of the bulb
Reply:Good question. The guy above had your answer but I can tell you that these plants keep blooming for years if you keep them watered and in the shade. Mine are now over 10 years old and get better every year.

How do I best care for indoor bulbs?

I have tulips, hyacinth, and an amaryllis potted indoors. How do I care for them as well as possible? What are good plant foods to give them so I don't burn the bulbs? How much light should they get?

How do I best care for indoor bulbs?
I currently have amaryllis' growing inside right now. The stalk on this thing is about 3 feet long. I feed it Miracle Grow Indoor Plant food. It requires moderate light. Mine is below my sky light and it is going crazy.

I have a hyacinth also. It is potted and usually remains outside but, it has been too cold lately. I have it on a table if front of the window so it get adequate sunlight.

I have never tried growing tulips indoors. Mine are planted outside and are already sprouting.

Indoor bulbs like cooler temps (60 degrees or so) so, just a recommendation, don't place directly in front of a heater vent.

this website should help you out:

http://www.coloradogardening.com/article...
Reply:They generally do well with moderate light, which is one reason they do well indoors. Find a good bulb food that is mixed with water; mix it at one-quarter strength, and use it at each watering. The amaryllis can probably be "forced" again next year if it gets sufficient cold after it blooms; tulips and hyacinths can usually only be forced once, and then must be discarded.

I really am not fond of Melissa and there are already 3 Elisabeth/Elizabeth/Isabelle's in our family (was thinking Lissabelle that is why I mentioned Isabelle) so I am confused. I really like girlly names like Caterina and Priscilla, etc...I am having trouble warming up to Felicity...those are the only traditional names that have the nickname. I really do not like Alyssa. I like names that start wtih L and thought I liked a rhyming version of ariceli (if you saw my other question...Lisseli) but now I don't...

Middle name is Carolyn after my mother. So the ones I have come up with are

Lissandra (knew a Sandra in school I didn't like lol...Sondra maybe...)

Amaryllis (can't quite name my child after a flower though...)

Music Man audition tips?
I never recommend wearing a "costume" for your audition piece, but if you find a similar color scheme or similar type dress or something that matches a production you have seen or in the movie that can hel on what to wear.

I don't know if you have got the basic audition tips down but the # one I recommend is:

DO NOT APOLOGIZE if you need to start over just do it.

YES.. if you can get into that many plays where some of them youve been main characters you must be fantastic..do you go to an acting school
Reply:i wouldn't know you would have to put a video of yourself on you tube or something then put the link in another question like this one.

I'm pretty sure you're right about "orreries"; a little Wikipedia research shows that there is a port on the Sea of Azov called Yeysk. I wonder whether that could be transliterated as "Yeisk".

I need a flower/herb name that begins with the letter K.?

Its for an afghan I'm making for my mom-in-law. On the chart, it appears to be similar to an amaryllis or a lily. The flower is pink.

Thanks everyone!

I need a flower/herb name that begins with the letter K.?
Kaffir Lily - Schizostylis coccinea, is the only answer that meets your qualifications, lily and pink, in fact many shades of pink. Clivia miniata is also known as a Kaffir lily but I've never seen a pink one, only orange and yellow. RScott

Does anyone know of a website where I can go and figure out what kind of plant I have?

I have a plant that could be an amaryllis, but I don't think it is. The bulb looks like a big onion and it has one huge leaf that is growing quite tall (2 feet so far)! Last year in the fall or winter it sprouted flowers but we can''t remember what color. We're just wondering what it is so we can know how to care for it. Thanks.

Gift suggestions for elderly neighbors?

I recently moved to a small town, and my neighbors, an active elderly couple, have been extremely nice to my daughter and me. They bought us housewarming gifts (a pair of carved angels, probably worth about $20), and they also gave my daughter a present for her birthday (a drawing kit, probably worth around $10).

I want to give them something nice and thoughtful, but not so extravagant as to be awkward. I'm thinking something around $20. They are both very high energy. He dotes on his flower garden and she is into quilting. I would be hesitant to get them gifts related to these hobbies, though, because I don't want to duplicate something they already have. Their home is already impeccably decorated, so I don't want to give them any sort of a knick-knack. I don't know their taste in food (or dietary restrictions), so that's out.

I thought about getting them a nice potted amaryllis to sprout. Any other ideas?

Gift suggestions for elderly neighbors?
That Idea you have of giving them a potted amaryllis (or just a selection of Spring Bulbs to plant) -- is an EXCELLENT Idea -- and also ... if you can ... maybe you and your daughter could go out on the weekend and (after your own yard is done) see if they need any help raking or picking up broken branches in their yard too!

I know they would appreciate the help -- and if you do decide to give them the Bulbs/Plants -- that they would welcome you and your daughter over in the summer to view the beautiful blossoms -- and what better way to give your child an appreciation for gardening than to have her see and work with an elder with so much gardening experience!
Reply:Most Amaryllis bulbs sold are infected with bulb scale mite and/or Stagonospora curtsii - a fungus that kills the bulbs after 1 - 2 years. It is much better to buy easy seeds/ miniature roses from a reputed grower for your friends. You save them a lot of trouble. Report It
Reply:hey why you are in confusion this is not a big matter to you , if you want to give him more thoughtful gift i suggest you that there is Christmas after few days you should give them a letter by Santa or it may be a bin of cookies.if you want to get more thoughtful suggestions please come to us

http://christmas4you.cjb.net/
Reply:I think the idea of having them over for din-din or just snacks is a great idea! Maybe they can help you and your daughter decorate your tree that evening and then give them a special thank you ornament from you and your daughter for their tree? I know I am a bit older (grandmother of 5 yr old) and I would love that!
Reply:I would say invite them over for dinner, that would be the greatest gift and may be your daughter can draw them a nice photo and give them with a nice frame.
Reply:Depends adult diapers?...lol just kidding, but I give my elderly friends pre made knitted things like Afghans and couch covers.
Reply:Fruit Baskets , Pies or a Cake hmm maybe some cookies lol . Older people love to eat ! hell we all love to eat!

I want to plant a bulb garden this autumn. Where is the best place to purchase flower bulbs?

tulips, crocus, daffodils and narcissus, anemone, hyacinth, amaryllis, and iris

I want to plant a bulb garden this autumn. Where is the best place to purchase flower bulbs?
You can get them at any garden store - Home Depot, Lowes, etc. or you can buy them online from places like the Michigan Bulb Company. If you know someone who has a nice garden, maybe they can give you some bulbs, since they need to be thinned out occasionally. My mom grows KILLER red %26amp; yellow tulips %26amp; she gave me a basket full of her bulbs. I can wait till spring to see how they look!
Reply:There are a lot of places online you can order from or you can check your local nursery, home depot, lowes, etc
Reply:I find Garden Express one of the best suppliers of most bulbs. Reasonable too. Prompt delivery always and all bulbs arrive in excellent condition. At present I am enjoying many and varied flowers from bulbs planted this year.
Reply:I believe you shouldn't buy bulbs unless you can see them. That means no mail order because you're buying based on what their catalog says. You may get small bulbs and they may come too late or early. If there's a mistake in your order it's too late to resolve it.

I think it's much better to go to a good lawn %26amp; garden center and buy them there. Usually they carry different grades of bulbs from very large, that you can usually buy individually, to the medium and smaller grades which usually come in packages of various quantities. Also never buy a bulb that smells rotten or that is soft.
Reply:If you want to get extremely large bulbs you can go to Dutch Bulbs, White Flower Farm, Brent and Becky's Bulbs. There are so many online places to buy bulbs. Look them up.
Reply:Ebay from Rarebulbs.com they are cheap, great quality, and fast shipping. And they are always quick to answer any questions on planting guides etc.
Reply:The local garden supply store.
Reply:Just about every store at this time of year, including Wal-Mart sells bulbs for planting.

Can you cover red ink with a different color?

I got a tattoo a year ago of an amaryllis which was my mom's favorite flower. It is way too red and everyone mistakes it for a rose - which is the last thing I wanted! I know red is heavily pigmented so unsure what the options are.

Can you cover red ink with a different color?
Hey

Im married to a tattoo artist and been working as a Professional Body Piercing in this industry for almost 5 years.Red is by far one of the easiest colors to cover up! Shop around the local tatt shops, and strike up some convo with the different artists about a cover up (make sure you show them the tatt you already have and then mention your cover up idea). Ive watched my husband cover dark black tattoos with color pieces (the black is lost in the shading) and red and pink flowers with just about any and everything!

Good Luck
Reply:Go back to the artist who did it and ask. Most tattoo artists will not do touch-ups or fix the work of other artists, out of respect.
Reply:go back ot the tatoo artist but if you dont feel like it if you put some actually alot, of cover up on it it will fade the red
Reply:tatoos.. eh they are a risky thing to get because you never no how there gonna vome out. u can get surgry to remove it though.

Houseplant experts Help... Calathea Care...?

Hi... I'm one semi-experienced houseplant keeper and I want to know is this plant (Calathea) able to live indoors or it can only be kept inside greenhouses... I LOVE the markings on the leaves and want to experience the joy of keeping it... Any suggestions?

(I grow african violet, clivia, peperomia, sansevieria, amaryllis, ferns and some other interesting plants in my apartment...)

Houseplant experts Help... Calathea Care...?
Calathea is a beautiful plant but a bit of a challenge to keep indoors. Yes it is possible. Here's what you do.

Step 1:

Provide a calathea with moderate light. Direct sunlight will make the leaf color less attractive and possibly burn the foliage. A window with direct sunlight coming in should be shaded by a transparent curtain. The best place for a calathea is an east or a west window with either a curtain or shade from a tree.

Step 2:

Increase the humidity of your calathea's environment. High humidity is essential to a calathea and unfortunately, most homes have low humidity. Increase the humidity by placing the plant on a tray of pebbles, placing it around other plants and misting it with soft water daily. Running a humidifier near the plant is a drastic but more successful method.

Step 3:

Give a calathea a temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. A somewhat warmer room will be tolerated, however the warmer the room the more humidity the plant needs. Because increasing the humidity sufficiently is challenging, temperatures less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit are best.

Step 4:

Water your calathea frequently enough to keep most of the potting mix moist. When the top of potting mix is dry but there's moisture several inches into the soil (gage by sticking your finger down into the potting mix), it is time to water. The water must be room temperature, so let the water sit in your watering can for 15 minutes before watering.

Step 5:

Check the calathea every spring to see if it needs re-potting. If roots have wrapped around the bottom of the plant, move the plant into the next size pot.

Ideas for containers to force bulbs for indoor enjoyment?

such as containers or whatever for paper whites, hyacinth, amaryllis etc... best creative answer gets ten points!

Ideas for containers to force bulbs for indoor enjoyment?
Here's some ideas:

A cone of dark blue Iris reticulata makes an elegant tabletop decoration for colour in late winter

You can make a square basket filled with muscari and Tiarella cordifolia as underplanting (left). The shape is close to that of a traditional pot, but since the sides can be planted there is more space for plants.

Make a chickenwire shape that it is easy to water and that there are no narrow parts that could dry out. Here's a bulbs in a round basket with wired mesh that looks like a bird's nest:

Using colored glasses make an even more beautiful display. Look:http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/110...

The blue %26amp; purple vases look nice with Hyacinths in them. http://ohmyapt.apartmentratings.com/apar...

You can plant your bulbs in a decorative basket or in a tea pot, or in a watering can, too.

Good Luck! Thanks! Glad this was helpful :)

P.S. I thought the cone %26amp; using the chicken wire to shape a bulb container would be most helpful for those who want to be more creative.
Reply:Thanks! I know what you mean...I'm excited to see how my paper whites have grown little by little each day :) Imagine making a Valentine heart-shaped container or an Easter basket filled with Spring blooms ...your own personal arrangement...%26amp; giving it to someone you love.

Happy New Year!!! Report It
Reply:BTW, I bought my paperwhites (6 bulbs)... which were in a cute little decorated basket, complete with a dried soil cube %26amp; container... at a close-out sale for $3 at a discount grocery, just a few weeks ago.

All that was needed was water :) Report It
Reply:Go to a garden center and look for Hyacinth glasses. They are, in effect, a vase that has a narrow neck on it. Water is placed in the bottom and the bulb sits in the top 1/2. It looks really pretty.

Paper Whites can be grown in a vase filled with pebbles or Cranberries and water. Don't expect to recycle them in your garden, though. When grown in water they won't usually do so good in the garden the next season.

My Amaryllis are in plastic flowerpots with drainage holes and then I place them in ceramic Chinese fish bowls. Looks a little more decorative than the plain plastic poots. Have fun!

Here's a pic from the 'net of a Chinese fish bowl in case you've never seen one. Mine are lighter colored.

Any fast-growing flowers in FL?

Right now it is fall, and I'm looking for a flower seed that grows quickly at this time. I'm also hoping that they are convenient to purchase at like Home Depot or some sort.

Do amaryllis flowers or sunflowers grow fast and well here?

Thanks

Any fast-growing flowers in FL?
Depending on whether or not you get frost in your area, you probably should wait to plant your sunflowers. They do best if you start them in pots in February and have them in the ground by late March.

Here are some seeds that do well in most parts of Florida and grow fairly quickly. They also attract butterflies.

Salvias

Calendulas

Petunias

Gazania

Cockscomb

Impatiens

Ageratum

Snapdragon
Reply:depending of your planting number area.. I live in Central Florida - Planting region number 9 before was in region 10B

Amaryllis bulbs are very easy to grow and will multiply easily if they are planted in a shady area and well drained soil.

I'm not sure about the Sunflowers but it should be no problem if you plant in the fall by spring they should be in full bloom.

Personally, I prefer the Hibiscus which blooms every day in full sun and grow real fast in my area.

Where can I find an old fashioned costume for The Music Man?

I am in the Music Man and need a costume by January 23 (dress rehearsals). I am playing a Pick-a-Little Lady and Amaryllis' sister, Sarah (a part that was not in the movie, the directors made up that part). Please tell me where I can find a costume for these parts (I"ve already checked eBay) HELP!

Where can I find an old fashioned costume for The Music Man?
Go to google, search "costume shop" and "name of your city/town". Then click the link that says, "Local results for costume shop near *name of your city, state*". This will bring up an interactive map and listing of costume shops on the left. If you want costume shops specifically in relation to how close they are to your house, type your home address in at the top where it says "your city, state". Good luck.

Do you know what you're looking for, dress-wise? We did a production of the Music Man a couple years ago and I have pictures (I too was a pick-a-little lady). If you would like to see those pics, e-mail me.
Reply:The local thrift store/ Salvation Army is the place to go. Whenever we have plays, we do most of our shopping there. Clothes are older and super cheap. They also have many dresses and suits that can be used for different time periods

If you need something flashier, you can dye the dress. If you need something dingier, you can soak it in water with tea bags for several hours to a day.

If you need any additions or accessories you can try various costume stores or a fabric store. Costume stores will be expensive.

Look on the internet for pictures of other Music Man performances, and you already know what to shop for.
Reply:Go to Party City or any other costume store.
Reply:Go to Ole' man shop!

amaryllis (?m'?r?l`?s), common name for some members of the Amaryllidaceae, a family of mostly perennial plants with narrow, flat leaves and with lilylike flowers borne on separate, leafless stalks. They are widely distributed throughout the world, especially in flatlands of the tropics and subtropics. Many ornamental plants of this family are mistakenly called lilies; they can be distinguished from members of the lily lily, common name for the Liliaceae, a plant family numbering several thousand species of as many as 300 genera, widely distributed over the earth and particularly abundant in warm temperate and tropical regions.

Several fragrant, showy-blossomed species are commonly called amaryllis: the true amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna), or belladonna lily, of S Africa, and the more frequently cultivated tropical American species of Sprekelia, Lycoris, and especially Hippeastrum (e.g., the Barbados lily). The large Narcissus genus, including jonquils and daffodils, is native chiefly to the Mediterranean region, but it has been naturalized and is now widespread in the United States. Although the common names are sometimes used interchangeably, strictly the daffodil is the yellow N. pseudo-narcissus, with a long, trumpet-shaped central corona; the jonquil is the yellow N. jonquilla, with a short corona; and the narcissus is any of several usually white-flowered species, e.g., the poet's narcissus (N. poetica) with a red rim on the corona. The biblical rose of Sharon rose of Sharon, common name for several plants, especially Hibiscus syriacus, of the family Malvaceae ( mallow family), and for St.-John's-wort , i.e., any species of the genus Hypericum of the family Hypericaceae (St.-John's-wort family).

Among many others that have become naturalized and are cultivated in Europe and North America are the snowdrops (any species of Galanthus), small early-blooming plants of the Old World whose flowers are symbolic of consolation and of promise; and the tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa), a waxy-flowered Mexican plant.

Economically, the most important plants of the family are of the nonbulbous genus Agave, the tropical American counterpart of the African Aloe genus of the family Liliaceae (lily family). Different agaves provide soap (e.g., those called amoles—see soap plant soap plant, any of various plants having cleansing properties. The name "century plant" arises from the long intervals between bloomings—from 5 to 100 years. After blooming, the century plant dies back and is replaced by new shoots. Audition help for "Music Man": I want to audition, and I have all the info, but a few questions about it....

At the audition, I am sked to singsixteen bars of a ballad and up-tempo song. Check. But one question: my ballad song has a short four-bar intro. Does that count as part of the sixteen bars? Or are the bars only counted when there are vocals? And another thing: I am interested in the roles of Amaryllis and Gracie, but mostly Amaryllis. If I don't get either one, I would like to be in the ensemble. What kind of monologue should I do? I know a slightly-comedic one, "Grandma's House", and a dramatic one, from "How I Learned to Drive". Thanks for all your help!

Audition help for "Music Man": I want to audition, and I have all the info, but a few questions about it....
Yes the 4 bars at the beginning of the song is counted into the 16. You should have the pianist play a chord that will bring your right into the singing or one measure, which the pianist most probably will do anyway, they are used to that type of stuff.

As far as the monologue, remember that comedy is harder then drama. If you choose the comedic one read it as a dramatic monologue. If you look at shows today that are comedies, like MadTV, they play comedy roles like they are being funny and it KILLS the whole thing, IMHO. What makes a comedic role funny is when you really perform the part as a serious role.

What is the best way to care for little amaryllises that just germinated from seed?

Water them every day and let them get lots of sun. Make sure that the soil never dries out.

What is the best way to care for little amaryllises that just germinated from seed?
The cultivation of Amaryllis belladonna requires very little attention. Amaryllis belladonna can be grown from seed. The soft fleshy white to pink seed should be planted when fresh. Dispersal of seed in winter is normally by wind. Seed dispersal is timed to coincide with the first winter rains.

Germination can occur in two weeks, but seedlings require three to six years or longer to flower. Large clumps of bulbs can be divided from the mother bulb during the dormant period. The bulbs and offsets can be planted immediately. The bulbs must be planted with their necks at soil level. The belladonna lily can also be grown in large pots using a very porous soil mix. The bulb can also tolerate quite arid conditions. In cultivation flowers are produced almost every year but in the fynbos they emerge prolifically after fires.

Assuming your plant is the mentioned one, I do hope this info will help.

Regards.

Is there a airport shuttle service from Nice Int'l Airport to Amaryllis Hotel in Nice, France?

I am hoping one of you will know if the hotel offers free or at least disclunted airport transfers to their hotel clients?

Is there a airport shuttle service from Nice Int'l Airport to Amaryllis Hotel in Nice, France?
Hi from Nice !

The Amaryllis Hotel is located close to the central train station (called 'Nice Ville'). So it's very easy to take the shuttle that takes you from the airport to the station and then to walk to the hotel.

Bus line #99 called 'Aéroport - Nice Gare SNCF Direct'

From Terminal 2 =%26gt; platform 4

From Terminal 1=%26gt; platform 1

I guess the price is 1.30€ or you can have a day-ticket for unlimited travel for 4€.

Forget about the cabs it's a rip off.

Enjoy the Riviera !

How many weeks does it take after dormancy for an amaryllis bulb to show new signs of growth?

Like every year its finished being dormant and you plant the bulb how many weeks does it take to see new signs of growth?

How many weeks does it take after dormancy for an amaryllis bulb to show new signs of growth?
Six to ten weeks, depending upon the variety. I think though that you need a book on them with all the questions you have been asking.
Reply:Here is how My Mother Handles her amaryllis.

She has had the same awesome plant for probably 10 years or more.

First off make sure that you're using a Clay pot with a drainage hole in the bottom. Place about 1 inch of gravel or small stone in the bottom of the pot (for proper drainage) Next fill the pot about half way with fresh soil and place your bulb in the middle. Cover to within 1 inch of the top of the pot with more soil. Moisten the soil and place it in a sunny spot. You will see growth within a couple of months. They are slow growing.

Once your amaryllis has finished blossoming do not remove the bulb.

Take the entire pot into the basement or a dark room if you don't have a basement. Tip it on it's side. and leave it there. Do not water or move it at all.

In the spring, bring the pot back upstairs, water it and the process will start all over again.

My Mothers plant has had 1 blossom for almost 10 years now (each Year) this year it

was a huge suprise! She had two blossoms at

the same time.

Try this and you should be seeing a wonderful

plant for many years to come.

Reply:http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/hortic... a look here at this site. I have an amaryllis and it has not had any flowers on it yet. The amaryllis should be dormant right now. It says here but read on and you should be able to find the answer.

You should force it into dormancy by not watering it and putting it in a warm dark place. THen after 8 weeks bring it out in the sun and start watering and then new will grow.

What can i do to amke sure my amaryllis seedlings don't get root rot?

And is it okay to water them once a week and should i leave them in bright light? 10 points best answerer.

What can i do to amke sure my amaryllis seedlings don't get root rot?
When you sow the seeds in soil (that is amended with perlite so that your soil is light and airy), barely cover them and keep them moist, but not soggy. Keep the seeds at room temperature.

Keep the newly planted seeds in partial shade until they germinate. Then gradually increase the amount of light they receive until they are in full sun. Fertilize with a half-strength liquid fertilizer solution every other week. Seedlings are ready for planting in the garden after one year.

Follow basic care for seedlings. Keep them warm and moist in full sunlight or artificial light, %26amp; make sure your planters or pots allow your soil to drain well.

Is it harmful or helpful to put my amaryllis bulb in the refrigerator to simulate cold weather?

I wonder if the bulb is from a tropical location and shouldn't be refrigerated? any advice? I will take it out of the refridge when I want to plant it for some indoor color in the winter ( in 8weeks)

Is it harmful or helpful to put my amaryllis bulb in the refrigerator to simulate cold weather?
Refrigerators are often kept too cold. You'd do better to keep them in a celler, basement or someplace cool but not cold.

Prior to planting, store bulbs at 41-55°F (5-13°C) and do not let them dry out. For container-grown plants, two systems are available. They are: Bring container plants indoors in the fall before the first frost. Since, it is not necessary to rest the plants, place them in a well lighted area at 50-55°F (10-13°C) for 8 to 10 weeks. Then return to a warm, well lighted growing area. In the fall, cease watering the planting medium and place plants in the dark at 41-55°F 95-13°C) for at least 2 months. Then water the planting medium and place in a warm, well lighted growing area.
Reply:Good question. The process you are refering to is called forcing bulbs. When you put them in the refrigerator this forces them to go dormant. I simply dig mine up annually before first frost and put them in a dry location. Cut off foliage after it has browned. It may take eight weeks after replanting before it flowers. Use blood meal and bone meal to amend soil.

What is the common name for the lily Amaryllis Belladonna?

It flowers before its leaves appear.

What is the common name for the lily Amaryllis Belladonna?
Amaryllis belladonna has its common names, in the UK, as 'Belladonna Lilies' or 'Jersey Lily', in South Africa as 'The March Lily', in the United States as 'Naked Lady', in Portugal as 'Bordao de Sao Jose (St. Joseph's Staff), as St. Rosalina in Sicily, or St. Rosa or The Madonna Lily in Italy; and sometimes in Spain as 'Meninas Para Escola', translating to 'Girls going to School' and because they bloom in late September at the beginning of the school year, when girls in pink uniforms start attending classes.

Other known names include: Red Lily and names in relation to its flower blooming season include March Lily and August Lily.

Belladonna Lily which is a monotypic native plant of South Africa produces long, slender leaves in the spring, which die back in early summer. It is a bulbous plant with dull green leaves that are up to 1? feet (45 cm) tall by 0.75 inch (2 cm) wide. Fragrant rosy-pink flowers appear in late summer, on 24 inch (60cm) stalks. The 4 to 6 inch (10-15cm), trumpet-shaped flowers can also be white, red, rosy red, or pink and are excellent as cut flowers, lasting about a week. Blooming time in the greenhouse is early August; in zone 7, long after the foliage has long disappeared. Plants form lovely trumpet shaped flowers on 1? foot (45 cm) tall flower stalks. The pinkish-white to rose-red flowers are up to 4 inches (10 cm) long and are mildly fragrant.

In late summer the bulb produces one or two naked stems 30-60 cm tall, each of which bear a cluster of 2 to 12 funnel-shaped flowers at their tops. Each flower is 6-10 cm diameter with six tepals (three outer sepals, three inner petals, with similar appearance to each other), white, pink or purple in colour. This flowering pattern is the cause of its common name "naked lady".

The scientific name Amaryllis is taken from a shepherdess in Virgil's pastoral "Eclogues," from the Greek αμαρυσσω (Latin amarysso) meaning "to sparkle." It is used as a given name for females.

The story of Amaryllis Belladonna L., from a European perspective, undoubtedly goes back to the 15th century when Columbus and his crew explored the realm of the scarlet Belladonna. By the 17th century the Red Lily was apparently so well known to New World visitors that it was sometimes mentioned only in passing. Du Tertre (1667) compared it to a pale orange tulip, and drew attention to the whitish center. Rochefort (1658, 1665) also called it orange, but compared it to the Daylily of the same color. Laet and Ligon only mentioned that there were white and red lilies in Brazil and Barbados. The Red Lilies were brought to Europe and thought to be reminiscent of the sword/cross emblem of the St. Jacob Knights.

Reply:Common Name: belladonna lily, March lily, naked lady

Family: Amaryllidaceae

Amaryllis belladonna grows in the South Western Cape. The bulb is typically large, brown and rounded and has a moderate growth rate. The large clusters of scented, trumpet-shaped pink or white flowers are carried on a long purplish-red and green stem appearing 50cm above the soil. Up to twelve flowers are produced from the flowering stem. These flowers are 10cm long and apically flare open about 8cm. Protruding from each flower is a long upturned style amongst a group of large curved anthers. The anthers are black and shiny at first, but split open to reveal masses of sticky white pollen. The inflorescence tends to face the direction that receives the most sun. Although most flowers are pale pink, white and dark pink forms occur.

The strap-like leaves are deciduous and are produced after flowering. The leaves remain green throughout the winter period. The leaves produce a starch, which is stored in the bulb. In summer the leaves die back and the bulb becomes dormant. This strange phenomenon of flowering before the leaves appear is known as hysteranthy. The belladonna lily's specific flowering time is late summer, February and March.

Amaryllis is Greek feminine and is named after a beautiful shepherdess. The specific epithet belladonna means beautiful lady. The appearance of the tall, flower stalk without any leaves accounts for the common name "naked lady". Amaryllis belladonna in its natural habitat is found in small dense groups among rocks. Therefore the best place to plant them would be in a rock garden. In a created landscape, Amaryllis can be used mixed in between blue Agapanthus as a good combination, as the evergreen leaves of the Agapanthus provide skirts for the naked ladies. They can also be grown between a ground cover or mixed annual or herbaceous border.

The cultivation of Amaryllis belladonna requires very little attention. Amaryllis belladonna can be grown from seed. The soft fleshy white to pink seed should be planted when fresh. Dispersal of seed in winter is normally by wind. Seed dispersal is timed to coincide with the first winter rains in late March and April. Germination can occur in two weeks, but seedlings require three to six years or longer to flower. Large clumps of bulbs can be divided from the mother bulb during the dormant period. The bulb can also tolerate quite arid conditions. In cultivation flowers are produced almost every year but in the fynbos they emerge prolifically after fires.

the only thing about an amaryllis is that they are seasonal you can usually purchase them in the fall closer to christmas so it blooms later im not sure you can purchase them any other time of the year.

How long does it take before an amaryllis bulblet matures into an adult and flowers?

Having grown ammaryllis from seed, I can say that the first year you should not put them outside. The second year they start to develope a bulb and you are safe putting them outside. The third year you should get a small bloom.

How many times can I expect my amaryllis to bloom.?
The Amaryllis Lily normally only blooms once in a season. You can put it out side in the summer, which will let it gain strength, before the last frost stop watering it, and bring it inside. About November you can start watering it, place it in a warm location where it will get good light and soon you will have more blooms. More information about it's care can be found in the link below.

What should i do if my amaryllis isn't flowering?

I've already cut the leaves twice to have it regrow and bud, but its not flowering. My friend has the same plant and it have alot of flowers on it. What am i doing wrong?

What should i do if my amaryllis isn't flowering?
The technique recommended for years has been growing the plants on through the summer outdoors, and then inducing dormancy by stopping watering in the fall and placing them in a dry cool spot indoors for 10 to 12 weeks.

The reason for this is to try force blooming for a specific period, usually Christmas.

However, for bigger, healthier plants, I recommend allowing the bulb to continue growing vigorously as long as possible, so it will reward you with better blooms in January or February. My amaryllis is 100 years old. It was my great-grandmothers, and it's doing wonderfully. I treat it as a green house plant and it blooms for me 2 times a year.

Apply a standard water-soluble houseplant fertilizer at half the recommended strength every two weeks.

Keep bulb in a pot sized "just right". As the bulb grows and the pot fills with roots, move it up to a bigger pot that's just slightly larger than the bulb. I like to use tall, narrow clay pots.

In summer, I move the plant outdoors into a sunny spot and treat it like a container plant. I continue fertilizing until the middle of August. NEVER allow the soil to dry out, but avoid keeping it soggy.

In fall, before there's a chance of frost, bring the plant inside and place in a sunny window or under plant lights. The leaves may yellow and die off by late December. During this time, keep the plant moist, not wet; most importantly, don't let the pot dry out. The buds for the new flowers should appear in January or February, but sometimes they bloom as late as March.

After flowering, resume feeding and keep the pot in a sunny window or under plant lights until it can go outdoors again. Big vigorously growing bulbs will produce offsets – little baby bulbs – which you can pot up to grow to flowering size in a couple of seasons.
Reply:It could be a young bulb and may not flower until next year. Cutting the leaves does not increase flowering ... from my experience. Take care of it and see what happens next year. Do not cut any more leaves unless they yellow and die.

How do I care for an amaryllis?

there should be a instruction sheet with it, it will never bloom again unless it is dried out for a couple of months :(

How do I care for an amaryllis?
Very easy.

Basically an amaryllis plant will grow before your eyes. Place bulb in pot of soil, exposing about 1/3 of the upper blub. Water throroughly, once, until the stem starts to grow. Then water a little bit each time the soil feels dry. The stem will lean toward a light source, so you may want to rotate the pot each time the stem looks as if it is leaning.

Enjoy watching this plant grow.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to buy one!

How do you care for an Amaryllis plant?

The most important thing you have to remember for a potted, indoor amaryllis plant is that it must get a lot of full, direct sun. The longer the leaves, the healthier the plant (and the bulb) will be. This is one houseplant that should be placed as close to a window as possible -- whoever says otherwise has never successfully grown amaryllis plants indoors. (When in flower though, if possible, I would not place the plant so close to a window -- just to keep the flower nice for a longer period.)

Also remember that an amaryllis naturally dies down and goes dormant. It is not dead or diseased -- just resting for a few months before it blooms again. Place the plant in a dark and dry place -- in the pot it was grown in, as long as the bulb has not outgrown the pot.

You can also plant these flowering bulbs outside, much the same way you would treat any other summer flowering bulb. In northern climates, however, you have to dig them up and bring them inside -- and place them in a dark, dry place for overwintering.

DON'T cut off or trim a healthy amaryllis leaf. Many people do this practice which lowers the vitality of the bulb.

Don't over-fertilize with nitrogen fertilizer, indoors or outdoors.

Don't get rid of your amaryllis plant just because it stopped blooming.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I water when the soil is dry to the touch.

How do you care for an Amaryllis plant?
water only when the soil has completely dried out; make sure it has lots of direct sunlight
Reply:I live in zone 6, these directions would be for any area that the ground freezes in winter. I am guessing you have an amaryllis bulb that is growing already, and if there are flower stalks coming up the plant needs to be in full sun untilthe flowers start to open, then move it out of direct sun for the duration of the blooms only. The plant should be watered when the soil is on the dry side. Once the plant has finished flowering, remove the flower stalks and keep in full sun until the beginning of september. After flowering, fertilize the plant . I would think a geranular bulb food would be good, but I use osmocote, which is a granular slow release fertilizer, good for 3 months, and practically fool proof. I have many amaryllis and I dont plant them in the ground unless I just sink the pot down a bit in the ground. Come september you need to stop watering the plant, so it is much easier to move the pots than dig up the bulbs. (in ground freezing areas)Do not cut the leaves off until they die. The plant should then be stored in a cool dark place until at least december, no water,no light. I put mine in the basement, in their pots. This is their resting period, now you can put them back in direct sunlight, water sparingly until new growth begins, and hopefully enjoy another round of beautiful flowers. Good luck.

PS Since I have 4 pots with 5 bulbs in each, I stagger the time bringing them back into the light, a couple weeks at a time, so they dont flower all at once.
Reply:They are such beautiful flowers...I always start the bulb from Walmart in the house.....just follow the instructions on the box....after they bloom..plant them outside....when the foliage dies with the arrival of cold weather, use some bone meal and blood meal on top of the ground and around the bulb....scratch the ground a little and every time it rains, a little more fertilizer will go down to the bulb...then the bulb can get everything it needs to bloom for you in the yard next summer. All my bulbs outside get bone meal and blood meal at least once a year after blooming.

What's the history of the amaryllis? Is it natural or man-made?

the common name 'amaryllis' refers to a plant who's scientific name is hippeastrum-there are many species found in nature but many of the large flowering varieties that are sold are man-made hybrids. Hybridizers will name their new hybrids, ex: Hippeastrum 'red lion' or Hippeastrum 'orange picotee' - they cannot use latin names which refer exclusively to species, ie. found in nature, like 'Hippeastrum calytratum' or 'Hippeastrum papilio'

I received some bulbs from a friend during the holiday season. Two amaryllis and one calla lily..?

I planted them all as the directions stated and with the little "soil pods" provided. The amarylis are okay with the exception that the leaves are very long, the calla, well that one is getting very tall (leaf wise) and no bloom. I know that these are tropical plants and that I live in the midwest, but I thought that since she got them at the local home depot type store, that they would be blooming and workable, and that I would be able to transplant them, but I am really concerned with how long the leaves are, how can I help the bulb for the next year?

I received some bulbs from a friend during the holiday season. Two amaryllis and one calla lily..?
You think Home Depot knows a lot about plants? (or cares?)

You'll get long leaves - amaryllis leaves can be two feet long. Give them water and a sunny window. In 6 weeks or so, you may have a flower.

You can keep both inside with bright sun, or additional artificial light %26amp; a fertilizer regimen. Then they both need a dormancy period.

Since I can't be bothered to fertilize, don't have a summy window in the summer, and an too cheap to buy plant lights, I plant my amaryllis directly in the ground in a place that gets afternoon shade. They get nutrients directly from the soil . They leaves immediately die back upon transplant, but then it sends up new leaves.

I dig them up in September, and put them in a cool dark place for a couple months. Then re-pot 'em inside.
Reply:Don't worry about the length of the leaf. Long leaves are a characteristic of the Calla Lily. Calla's can grow to more than 6 feet in height before Blooming. I live in Michigan and we have Callas that reach 7 feet in our yard. living in a Zone 4 or 5 climate (Michigan) It is advised that you dig-up the bulbs in the fall, wrap them in a paper bag(breathable) and place them in a dark dry place. (Basement) Keep in mind when you are planting them that it is never a good idea to plant bulbs in the same location that you place annuals that require frequent watering. Bulbs that are exposed to excessive water prior or after their season of growth, can cause the bulbs to get soft and rot. Let them go and watch em grow. Once they bloom they are beautiful.
Reply:actually niether is too tropical. not sure how hardy the armaryllis is, but the calla lily can surive to zero. if you do get colder than that foolow these steps.

armaryllis

get ready for spring. keep in a pot indoors till 607 and 70s apperar in your area. they leave them out till summer. by the time warm weathe comes in the plant will stop flowering and possibly die back. they bring them in your garage(in the winter) for cool storage.

calla lily

get ready for summer. keep indoors until all frost is gone. this is probably around june. take them outside all summer in a very sunny spot so it will give you the BEST flowers till frost. after frost comes and the plant appear dead bring in a cool place near your armaryllis

How do i get my amaryllis to bloom???

i have been getting big green leaves all summer but no flowers....i put them in the basement b/c i read that now they go dormat for a few months???? one of them is still growing...any suggestions please!!!!

How do i get my amaryllis to bloom???
Bring it inside, cut off the leaves and stop watering it. Set it in the dark somewhere inside of your house. I have mine in a closet upstairs that we never use. Leave it in the dark for 6-8 weeks . At the end of this time check on it. There should be a bud poking out of the top of the bulb. Bring the plant out to a sunny window location and within a couple of weeks you will have a flowering plant again.
Reply:you have to cut it back and leave it in the dark....NO WATERING...it must go completely dormant...then when you are ready to start it...put in the light and water...it should bloom in a matter of weeks.
Reply:Leave it out side until the frost kills the leaves. Then cut it back and bring it inside. Water and maybe by Christmas . Good luck.
Reply:I heard if you put an apple core in the water in the main stem of the plant it will encourage it to flower

How many leaves do an amaryllis need to have to be able to flower next year?

No so much as to the new leaves, what is or was important is to the leaves this year. Most bulbs need the leaves to stay on the plant and still grow long after flowering. This is the plants way of producing the energy in the leaves to be sent back to the bulb for next year. The small little bulb on the old flower or ovule should be removed as this is using energy in the leaves to produce some seed for next year. I wouldn't bother trying and let the bulb mature each year. Cut it off and let the bulb use it. If you cut the leaves and old flower stem together you lessen the chance of having a mature healthy bulb next year. I usually keep them for a few years and had some bigger that grapefruits. Some bulbs will flower with no leaves some with a few. Leaves aren't really needed to flower only replenish it after flowering

Reply:It's not about leaves, it's about bulb size. The bigger the bulb, the better it will flower.
Reply:For an amaryllis queen, you sure don't know much about them.

Are the stems of amaryllis's poisonous?

Would they harm a person if they were consumed?

Are the stems of amaryllis's poisonous?
From what I've read, it's just the bulbs that are toxic, but I wouldn't try eating the stems. Who knows what kind of gastrointestinal problems eating the stems can create?

"The leaves are not poisonous or toxic; the bulb itself is..."

"The bulbs or corms of tulip, daffodil, jonquil, narcissus, amaryllis, and iris produce primarily gastrointestinal signs (vomiting and diarrhea) after consumption..."

"Amaryllis is an ornamental plant commonly sold for its winter flowers. Ingesting the bulbs has poisoned humans." The toxic alkaloid, lycorine, is the principal toxin, although small quantities of related alkaloids are also present (Lampe and McCann 1985; Fuller and McClintock 1986)."
